The southeast corner of Yorkshire is one of those undiscovered
areas with a character and charm of their own. It's a unique area of wide open spaces and
huge skies and, fittingly, it boasts a unique tea room. Skipsea Grange
is a Grade II listed building which, together with the surrounding arable farm, has been
in Frances Davies' family for five generations. Frances herself spent some 25 years in
Pacific Asia but in the early 1990s she returned home. Since she needed somewhere to store
what she calls her 'accumulated junk', her father gave her the extensive farm
outbuildings, including the former granary.
As Frances says, "I've created my own world here" and a fascinating
one it is. Ancient beams run the whole length of the spacious room, with a splendid log
fire and comfortable sofas at one end. In one corner, there's a collection of teapots,
(including a gold one which was a golden wedding present to Frances' father); in another,
some interesting gifts and crafts made by local people.
The Grainary is a child-friendly place with toys for them to play with and a
good choice of light snacks on the children's menu. The Grainary is also a
grown-ups-friendly place, offering a wide choice of main meals, quick meals (including an
All Day Breakfast), cream cakes, and desserts of the day. If you give 24 hours notice,
Frances will prepare one of her special dishes such as Roasts, Lancashire Hotpot, Fish Pie
or Vegetarian Bake, or indeed anything you would like to ask for.
The same concern for visitors' creature comforts is also evident in the 7 guest
rooms, two of which are suitable for disabled occupation. All of them have en suite or
private facilities, 'showers that work', Sky Television, and tea/coffee making facilities.
For more romantic guests, Frances can also provide a choice of two suites for
'that special occasion, ~ honeymoon, anniversary, or Dirty Weekend etc!'. Both of them
have their own dining area and 2-person Jacuzzis, one also has a 2-person sauna. If you
are anyone near this attractive corner of the county, make sure you don't leave before
paying a visit to, or staying at, The Grainary.
Opening times: 7.00 am - 7.00 pm (364 days a year; other times by
arrangement).
