At the northern tip of Sherwood Forest, at Haughton, a lively
background to the tales of Robin Hood has been created: an entire medieval village built
using the sets from the film Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. There are authentic shops and
houses, cobbled streets and a moated drawbridge, and characters in costume transporting
visitors back to the days of the famous outlaw. Opening times to this attraction vary with
the seasons, as they do at Haughton Park Farm Shop nearby. Officially in Bothamsall, the
farm gate on the B6387 is marked by a giant smiling ice cream cone. Thelma
Cheetham and her late husband Martin began producing their own brand of ice cream,
combining their two names to christen it "Thaymar". The ice cream is made by a
traditional process and uses only the finest natural ingredients: Jersey milk and cream,
raw cane sugar from Mauritius, and natural flavourings from Italy. There are twenty-five
tempting flavours, amongst them Kiwi, Brandy & Orange; Forest Fruit Ripple, and
"Rocky Mountain", vanilla with chocolate, nuts and fudge slowly dribbled in!
The lovely little tea room, its cottage windows prettily curtained in floral
print, was once "grandma's cottage" and it still has the original tiled floor
and stone hearth. Lunches are simple but satisfying, and of excellent quality. The ham and
cheese on the menu are all locally bought, and the scones and cakes (fresh cream Charlotte
The jams, preserves and chutneys served in the tea room, as well as the
Elizabeth King award-winning pork pies and sausages are also on sale in the farm shop,
once the farm's dairy. Here too you can purchase cartons of ice cream in any of the
flavours and take the taste of Thaymar home with you!
